Today on the podcast, we're going to look at why it's not a good idea to send links alone as a broadcast message. And the reason why is because there are people who are sending a link alone in a broadcast message because you're trying to promote your business. And some of you think it's a good idea. You know, you have 3000 contacts in your WhatsApp list and you just open up a new business or whatever. And, and you have a link to the website and so you just send a message that is nothing but one link.
So if you are interested in these sorts of issues, then subscribe to the podcast because these are the things we talk about every single day. You started the business. How do you promote it? You're reaching out to people. How do you start conversations? You're having conversations with people. How do you get them to become customers? These are the sorts of things that we talk about here on the podcast every single week.
Now, my name is Tavish Shima Ayedi, I'm the host of the podcast recording today's podcast out and about. It's a Sunday, kids are cat keys in class. So I'm just making some recordings, you know, before we all head home. So there'll be some noise in the background, some construction going on, you know, cars driving by and all of that. And if you'd love to connect with me, then call, send me a text message or WhatsApp message on 08064662140.
All right, so like I said today, why it's not a good idea to send links alone as a broadcast message because some people do that. In fact, I thought I received one of those today, but I've already chatted with the person and, you know, turns out that was not the case. But still, I'm going to make this podcast episode because I know that people do it all the time and I receive it. I receive them once in a while, just not today.
So before we go into why it's a bad idea, let's just do some definitions first because it accord to me that I have been saying broadcast, broadcast, broadcast and I am assuming that everybody knows what a broadcast is because I was complaining one time, one of my big aunties saying my big aunties, she said what is broadcasters like? Oh, OK, I just assume that everybody in Nigeria knows what the broadcast is. So just in case you're one of those people listening to the podcast and you have no idea what the broadcast is, a broadcast is this interesting feature that we have on modern phones where we can send messages to several recipients at once, to several people at the same time.
You can open up your phone, you can select 200 people and then just send one message to 200 people at the same time, brah, just like that. It's a wonderful feature and it makes life easy because now we can do things efficiently. If I want to reach out to 1000 people, I can do that. 2000 people I can. OK. Well, I think for WhatsApp there are some restrictions on how many people you can put in the broadcast. But for Telegram the restrictions are much more reduced.
So you can send more broadcast messages in Telegram than you can on WhatsApp. Well, you know, Nigeria seems to be a WhatsApp country. But either way, Sharp, it's very efficient. So the goal of people sending broadcasts is this is supposed to be a good marketing tool because you can send one message, you just click send and all of a sudden you can let 500 people know who you are. You can let 500 people know what you do.
You can let 1000 people know how you can help them, how you can let 2000 people know how much it costs to work with you. So in that sense, it is a good marketing tool. And because of that, I would encourage you people, yeah, you should send broadcast message, but with sense, with some sense, because this is the problem, because WhatsApp messages are easy to do and they're easy to send. WhatsApp messages are also easy to abuse.
So because of that, some of them are not done. They over communicate any small thing. Bra broadcast, yeah. Broadcast today, you send to broadcast Wednesday, you will send three broadcast Saturday, you send like 7. You know, you are annoying the hell out of people. Or maybe you send it not too much. You're only sending once in a month. But you are not communicating in the right context and you're not communicating in the right mode,
which is what people who send only one link. That's the problem. That's the that's the problem that they make. Just in case there's some of you don't understand what I'm saying, then put it this way. You guys know I have this podcast, right? Obviously I want more people to listen to the podcast, all right? I have about 3000 contacts on my phone. So if I just wake up one day and I decide to send just one link, one link to a podcast episode, I
didn't put any context. All I did was I just sent the link like that to 3000 people. That is not communicating in the right mode or you know, without giving it any context, you know, things like that. Now, the problem with over communicating or not communicating in the right context in the right mode is this. Eventually people start to drown you out because there's one of these my guys who started the podcast and of course, you know,
I want to support the boy now. I mean, because you know, we're all boys. So you help everybody out. And whenever the guy drops an episode, he just sends a link like that. He just sends a link like that. So this week just a link, next week, another link, the week after, another link. And of course, he's my boy, so I can't block him. What I did was I just did long press and then I moved him to archive. And so sometimes he actually sends me a genuine message.
But The thing is, I don't get to see it for maybe two or three months. And then when we have the conversation, I say, ah, Bros, no Vex. You know, I Vega, I was busy. He's a lie. I was not busy. I was tired of those messages. So I just did long press and I did add to archive. When you are not using broadcast messages properly, you are people will start drowning you out. You just become noise on WhatsApp, people start ignoring you.
Some people will even click on spam, some people will click on report, some people will click on block. Now, the problem is when people start spamming or blocking or reporting, it's a signal to WhatsApp that whatever it is that you're sending, you know, isn't valuable or maybe it might even be malicious. So for those of you who you wake up one day, you hear that your WhatsApp account has been blocked or restricted or something, this is what is happening.
You're pissing off too many people. And so, you know, some people spam, some people block. Now remember what we said at the beginning of the episode, that sending broadcasts is a very good idea as a marketing tool because it will create awareness about who you are, what you do, how you can help, how much it costs, where people can find you. What if it gets to the level where people are drowning you out, people are treating you as noise, people are ignoring you,
people are spamming you, people are blocking you, people are reporting you. Isn't that the reverse of marketing? Because now you don't get negative returns. Instead of getting plus 20 + 50 + 100 that people are listening to you, you're now getting, you know, you send 100 messages and you're now getting, maybe one person will open it and then 80 people will ignore you and then 20 will now hit clicker spam. You're now getting negative returns.
That is not the reason why we turn to all these modern communication tools to promote our business. So please, let's do this right now. This is the problem with sending links only #1 there's no context, there's no background, there's no nothing. And that affects the likelihood that somebody's going to click because everybody's busy now. They are what they're doing. So if you just see a link like that and it's a broadcast, maybe it wasn't meant for me, maybe it's not important, and then you just ignore, have some problem.
The second problem is nowadays everybody I don't they shine because there are lots of security risks in this country. Lots of people are using WhatsApp now to be doing 49 and to be doing identity theft and to do all kinds of things. So the average person now, when they receive a link, only a link from somebody that they don't know, they will just ignore or they will block or they will report if it is somebody that they know, but there's only a link, only you just leave it.
So like now, if I receive a link only, unless it's from my father-in-law, you know, I can send me a message. You know, it's oh, so I just got this link, you know, as in, you know, how far was it? Anything in particular? You know, like I will ask because you know, it's my, it's my father-in-law. I'll reach out somehow like, oh, I saw this link, but I don't want to click on it first because, you know, some of the older folk, you know, like my mom to whenever my mom sees documentaries on the BBC, she will now send them to me and I
must watch. And I'm like, mommy, I'll beg yourself. I mean, she's a nice woman and I love her, you know, but there's some things that we quarrel about, like my weight, for instance. So whenever there's a BBC documentary, you know, about how it's not good to be overweight and stuff like that, Mom, she would just send me that link, just the link only, you know, with no background. But anyway, what I'm saying basically is like, OK, that's mom.
See, that's my father-in-law. So that kind of one hour I'll reach out and ask like, oh, I just saw this link, you know, offer any reason something want us to discuss. But for most people, you just see link like that, they will just ignore because there's no background context. And then of course, because everybody's on high security alert, nobody wants their WhatsApp to be hijacked. So the solution to this now is very, very simple.
All you have to do is when you're sending a link as a WhatsApp message, just include a background context. That's it, That's all. Give some background context, give some accompanying text. That's it. That's all. You increase the chances that people are going to read your message. So for my friend now who sent a message, she's in the, how will I put it now, interior decor and personal style. Yeah. So that's our space. You just open up a new store and then you just send the link like that.
So let's say you are someone who is in that industry. Let me just give you some 2 ideas now. So #1 is a new store alert. You know, it's a very old idea. People have been doing it for a very long time. You know, opening soon, grand opening, just launching, blah blah blah. So you can send one of those messages, new store alert, a little bit about the store and then, you know, call to action. Are you thinking of upgrading your home or do you want to update your personal style?
Click on the link to go to our brand new store on Amazon. Or click on the link to blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. You see, So that's the context. New store alert, new store launching, new, new, new, whatever, whatever. Then call to action. What do you want them to do next then? Plus, the thing must also make sense for them. Are you thinking of upgrading your home decor? Are you thinking of beefing up your personal style?
Then click here. Or you can ignore the new store letter and just simply go straight to the point. You know, upgrade your space, upgrade your style to work with me. Click on the link below and then you send it. So you can see that just by giving a simple background context or putting some accompanying text, we can increase the odds that people are going to respond to our messages. Now, I know some of you might be tired of me talking about WhatsApp, WhatsApp, WhatsApp as a marketing tool, but I'm not going to stop because we all use WhatsApp as a marketing tool.
And also because, like I said, because WhatsApp is easy to do, it is easy to abuse. And I want to make sure that we don't abuse all these channels because our businesses are at stake, our profits are at stake, Our flexing is our stake, our house rent is at stake, our Peace of Mind is at stake. So let's learn how to do WhatsApp well. So that's it. And that's all for today. Remember, if you'd love to connect, then send me a text message or WhatsApp message or an SMS, or you can call on 08064662140.
Thank you very much for your time and attention. I'll catch you all some other time.
